How and Why i use Augmented Reality (AR) in my artwork

I began using AR this past summer. Honestly, before then I was unsure about the definition of augmented reality. AR is defined as using a device to add digital elements to a physical space or object. The most well known use of AR is in the filters applied to pics and videos on Instagram and Snap Chat. AR allows you to see yourself twenty years younger, as cartoon characters and sporting bunny ears. What drew me to the technology was the opportunity to enhance my handmade physical painting, drawings and sculptures with animation.

Augmented Reality show at Art&Joy Studios in St. Johnsbury, VT

When a friend invited me to exhibit at her space, Art & Joy, I wanted to create something that combines my animation practice with my paintings. In the past, I created sculptures with animated elements using the small projectors popularized in the 2010s. I made animated films using ceramic sculptures animated in a digital space. With AR, I found another exciting technique for combining the handmade with digital technology.

I love working with digital animation tools, especially when I am developing new techniques, but I am not an experienced developer. Luckily for me, there are a lot of other smart people in the world that made the AR part easy! I’m currently using the platform EyeJack that offers a free creator app for up to 100 views. I upload my target image (the painting) and my AR movie (the animation). The App generates a QR code that viewers can scan with the free viewing app and watch the paintings come to life. It’s can be perfect outlet for artists creating both animated and static works. It definitely helped me.
